Klokgebouw gets a makeover: Philips logo and clock temporarily removed

Anyone who has looked up at the Klokgebouw on Strijp-S in recent days will have noticed something missing. The well-known Philips emblem has been taken down from the roof and the clock is taking a short break. The landmark is getting a makeover.

The Klokgebouw is one of Eindhoven’s best-known buildings. On top of the former Bakelite factory stand the large Philips emblem and the clock, where the letters of Philips take the place of the numbers. They are part of the Strijp-S skyline and a reminder of the days when Philips made its products here.

The emblem and the clock haven’t gone anywhere for good. They are being restored so they can last for many more years. “The large Philips logo on the roof is getting a new canvas,” Strijp-S shared on Instagram.

The clock is being worked on too. Anyone who has looked up recently will have seen that time on the tower stood still for a while. That wasn’t a mistake when the clocks went back for winter time. It was part of the work. The hands have been taken off to be repainted, and the Philips letters that serve as the clock’s numbers are being replaced with new ones.

The clock will be back to telling the right time before the work is finished. If all goes to plan, the makeover will be done by mid-December. The Klokgebouw will then be back as everyone knows it on Strijp-S, with a gleaming Philips logo that can be seen from across the city.
